exemplar, [Ex.]: (unoff.) of a taxon, one selected to represent a taxon of<br />

higher rank, e.g. species representative of a genus.<br />

exerge: (zool., obsol.) a proposed term for a rank equivalent to that of<br />

subspecies.<br />

exfamiliaris: (zool., unoff.) used in a similar manner to familiaris (q.v.) to<br />

indicate feral forms of domesticated animals; see praefamiliaris.<br />

ex-holotype [ex holotypo]; see ex-type.<br />

ex-isotype: [ex isotypo]; see ex-type.<br />

exotypus: (zool., obsol.) proposed as an equivalent category to form (q.v.).<br />

explicit exclusion: (1) in a Code, a statement as to an exception to the<br />

application of that Code, or of particular provisions of that Code. (2)<br />

of a specimen, scientific name or type, one stated as excluded from<br />

the circumscription of a taxon by an author, e.g. by the use of "excl."<br />

(q.v.) before the name or specimen.<br />

explicit typification: (unoff.) an act of typification in which an author<br />

designates the type; cfr implicit typification.<br />

exsiccate: colloquial non-Latin usage for exsiccata (q.v.).<br />

exsiccata [noun, pl. exsiccatae; adjective, exsiccatus, -um]: a set of dried<br />

specimens, usually numbered and with printed labels, distributed by<br />

sale, gift, or exchange; e.g. Fungi exsiccati: a set of dried fungi); an<br />

exsiccate.<br />

extant: (1) of a taxon, having one or more living representatives<br />

(organisms) at the present time, or at some specified time since<br />

humans began keeping written historical records. (2) of a specimen,<br />

one still in existence.<br />

external specifier: (phyl.) a species or specimen that is explicitly excluded<br />

from the clade whose name is being defined; branch-based and<br />

branch-modified node-based definitions have external specifiers, but<br />

apomorphy-based, standard node-based, and apomorphy-modified<br />

node-based definitions do not; see internal specifier.<br />

extinct: of a taxon, one having no living representatives.
