nomen substitutum: (phyl.) a replacement name (q.v.).<br />

nomen superfluum, [nom. superfl.]: a superfluous name (q.v.).<br />

nomen tantum, [nom. tant.]: name only, used of names not applied in the<br />

sense of their type; a misapplied name.<br />

nomen translatum, [nom. trans.]: (zool.) a name that has been changed in<br />

hierarchical rank with a changed suffix.<br />

nomen triviale, [nom. triv.; pl. nomina trivialia]: a trivial name (q.v.).<br />

nomen typicum abstractum: (palaeo. bot., unoff.) the first name of the<br />

binomial of the name of a fossil pollen or spore, corresponding to<br />

the genus name of an extant taxon; see also sporomorph..<br />

nomen typicum concretum: (palaeo. bot., unoff.) a name inserted in<br />

brackets after the nomen typicum abstractum (q.v.) in the name of a<br />

fossil pollen or spore, e.g. Hexorites (Nothofagidites) oblata; i.e. in<br />

use corresponding to that of a subgeneric name of an extant species.<br />

nomen utique rejiciendum: (bot.) a name ruled as rejected by an<br />

International Botanical Congress; it and all combinations based on it<br />

are not to be used, and these names are listed in the Code; see<br />

rejected name.<br />

nomenclator: (1) a taxonomic catalogue or other listing of names<br />

distinguishing between accepted names and their synonyms; e.g.<br />

Index Animalium (CD Sherborn, 1920-33), Nomenclator Botanicus<br />

(EG Steudel, 1824). (2) (obsol.) one who creates scientific names.<br />

(3) a person who compiles a nomenclator.<br />

nomenclatorial: relating to nomenclators (q.v.); formerly used in the sense<br />

of nomenclatural (q.v.).<br />

nomenclatural: relating to nomenclature.<br />

nomenclatural act: (zool.) a published act which affects the nomenclatural<br />

status of a scientific name or the typification of a nominal taxon;<br />

such acts may be available, invalid, unavailable, or valid (q.v.).<br />

nomenclatural combination: (phyt.) the name of a subassociation,<br />

consisting of an association name followed by a subassociation<br />

epithet.
