209 The naming of organisms (and plant communities)<br />

valid name: (1) (zool.) of an available name, one acceptable under the<br />

provisions of the Code and which is the correct name for a taxon in<br />

an author’s taxonomic judgement. (2) (bot.) a validly published<br />

name, i.e. one published according to criteria for valid publication<br />

according to the Code; an effectively published name fulfilling<br />

certain requirements, and before considerations of legitimacy are<br />

entertained; only designations that are validly published are names<br />

in the sense of the Code; see also publication. (3) (vir.) a name<br />

conforming to the Code and pertaining to established taxa; see also<br />

accepted name.<br />

valid nomenclatural act: (zool.) one that is to be accepted under the<br />

provisions of the Code, i.e. the earliest available nomenclatural act<br />

relevant to a particular name or nominal taxon which does not<br />

contravene any provisions of the Code.<br />

valid publication: see valid name.<br />

validate: (bot.) to make valid, used in the context of valid publication of a<br />

name, either with reference to an existing designation (q.v.), or in<br />

describing the method by which this is effected.<br />

validated: (zool., obsol.) of a name, formerly used in the sense of<br />

conserved, i.e. a name that was considered and accorded potentially<br />

valid status by the Commission (ICZN).<br />

Validation Lists: (prok.) lists of names effectively published elsewhere<br />

which are compiled and published in issues of the International<br />

Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology to achieve<br />

valid publication.<br />

validly published name: (bot.) a name effectively published and in<br />

accordance with the requirements of the Code for valid publication;<br />

see valid name.<br />

vampirotype: (zool., unoff.) a type specimen, usually an insect, mounted<br />

with an oversized pin for the size of the specimen so that it appears<br />

impaled (!).<br />
