211 The naming of organisms (and plant communities)<br />

versus, [v., vs.]: against; as opposed to.<br />

vice, [v.]: in the place of; in succession to.<br />

-virales: (vir.) a suffix which denotes a taxon of the rank of order.<br />

-virinae: (vir.) a suffix which denotes a taxon at the rank of subfamily.<br />

viroid: (vir.) unencapsidated, low molecular weight, circular, singlestranded<br />

RNA molecules which replicate autonomously when<br />

inoculated into host plants; some are pathogeneric while others<br />

replicate without eliciting symptoms; used as the last part of species<br />

names of viroids in the rank of species (e.g. Potato spindle tuber<br />

viroid).<br />
