unjustified emendation: (zool.) any emendation (q.v.) other than a justified<br />

emendation (q.v.).<br />

unjustified original spelling: (zool.) the spelling of a family-group name<br />

based upon an unjustified emendation of a generic name<br />

unnecessary substitute name: (zool.) a replacement name (q.v.)<br />

introduced when no such name was required.<br />

unpublished name, [unpubl.]: a designation that has not been effectively<br />

published, i.e. not “names” in the sense of (bot.), used mainly with<br />

reference to designations in manuscripts or on specimen labels; cfr<br />

ined.<br />

unpublished work, [unpubl.]: a work that is not (zool.) published or (bot.)<br />

effectively published, or in (zool.) one that the Commission (ICZN)<br />

has ruled to be treated as unpublished.<br />

unrestricted emendation: (phyl.) a formal change in a phylogenetic<br />

definition that does not require approval by the Committee on<br />

Phylogenetic Nomenclature; an unrestricted emendation is intended<br />

to prevent undesirable changes in the application of a particular<br />

name (in terms of clade conceptualization) when the original<br />

definition is applied in the context of a revised phylogeny; see<br />

restricted emendation.<br />

unused name: see forgotten name, nomen oblitum.<br />

UPOV: (cult. pl.) Union Internationale Pour la Protection des Obtentions<br />
