53 The naming of organisms (and plant communities)<br />

conspecies: (1) (unoff.) two or more species belonging to the same genus.<br />

(2) (cult. pl., unoff.) a category for related and interbreeding species<br />

of wild origin (species), or originating in cultivation (specioid), or of<br />

both types.<br />

conspecific: belonging to the same species.<br />

constituent element: (1) (prok.) the type of a taxon. (2) (bot.) any<br />

specimen or illustration included within a taxon, especially those<br />

indicated in the protologue.<br />

Constitution: (zool.) an abbreviation of the title The Constitution of the<br />

International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature.<br />

constructotype: (zool., unoff.) a holotype created during a taxonomic<br />

revision as a result of a mix-up of body parts, e.g. male genitalia on<br />

a female body.<br />

contabulation: a description based on one of a number of specimens that<br />

are assigned to a single species of a new genus in which those<br />

characters are diagnostic at specific level.<br />

content: (unoff.) of a taxon, the set of its component organisms.<br />

contortotype: (zool., unoff.) the type specimen of a soft-bodied species that<br />

has dried to an unrecognizable state (!); see xerotype.<br />

contraction: an abbreviation that shortens a word by removing one or more<br />

of its middle letters, but retaining others including both the first and<br />

the last; e.g. “Dr” for “Doctor”.<br />

convarietas, [convar.]: (cult. pl., unoff.) a proposed rank for a group of<br />

related provarieties, between subspecioid, or cultiplex, and<br />

provarietas.<br />

conveniotype: (zool., unoff.) the type of a taxon that still has its<br />

distinguishing characters to be established (!).<br />

conversion: (phyl.) the act of establishing a pre-existing name in<br />

accordance with the rules of the PhyloCode.<br />

converted name: (phyl.) of a clade, a pre-existing name that has been<br />

established in accordance with the rules of the PhyloCode; denoted<br />

by the use of squared brackets ([. . . ]) around the citation of the<br />

author who published the name under a different Code.
