67 The naming of organisms (and plant communities)<br />

effective publication: (bot., phyt.) publication in accordance with the<br />

Code; the first step in considering the valid publication of a name,<br />

and achieved by distribution of printed matter (or before 1 Jan. 1953<br />

in bot. of indelible autographic matter), so as to make the work<br />

accessible to botanists generally; a requirement for any<br />

nomenclatural act; see also date.<br />

effectively published: (bot., phyt., prok.) of a name or epithet, one that has<br />

undergone effective publication (q.v.) but not necessarily valid<br />

publication (q.v.); (bio., cult. pl., zool.) published.<br />

egg type: see locality type.<br />

electotype: (zool., unoff.) in the case of a poorly preserved holotype, a<br />

specimen from a locality other than that of the holotype which<br />

agrees closely with the original description; see also epitype,<br />

neotype.<br />

electronic publication: (zool., prop.) of a work, one issued and distributed<br />

by means of electronic signals; to be considered published such a<br />

work must be archived with an organization other than the<br />

publisher.<br />

element: (1) a constituent part of a taxon of any rank; the elements of a<br />

species or infraspecific taxon are the individuals included within its<br />

circumscription, or specimens prepared from such individuals, or<br />

any figure or description of such individuals. (2) (zool.) of a genus<br />

or subdivision of a genus, a species. (3) (phyt.) a vegetation relevé<br />

in the case of associations and subassociations, and a syntaxon of<br />

the next subordinate principal rank in syntax of higher rank. (4)<br />

(prok., obsol.) the type strain to which a name is permanently<br />

attached.<br />

elevate: (unoff.) of a taxon, to raise in rank to a higher one in the taxonomic<br />

hierarchy; e.g. from that of a subspecies to a species.<br />

elide: (zool.) to deliberately omit one or more letters within a word.<br />

elimination, fixation by: see fixation by elimination.<br />

elision: (zool.) a word in which more or more letters have been deliberately<br />

omitted.<br />

emend, [emend., emendatio]: see emended.
