-ales: (prok., bot.) suffix added to the stem of a generic name to indicate<br />

that it applies to the taxon of a rank of order.<br />

alivotype: (zool., unoff.) a live type that requires special storage and<br />

handling; see also culto-type, escapotype, ex-type, vivotype.<br />

all. nov., [alliancia nova]: (phyt.) used after an author citation to indicate a<br />

newly introduced syntaxon name in the rank of alliance (q.v.).<br />

alliance, [alliancia, all.]: (1) (phyt.) one of the four principle ranks in the<br />

hierarchical system of syntaxa, between that of association and<br />

order; a plant community of definite floristic composition which<br />

presents a uniform physiognomy and which grows in uniform<br />

habitat conditions; names of alliances are terminated by the suffix "-<br />

ion". (2) (bot., obsol.) a rank in a taxonomic hierarchy, treated as<br />

equivalent to and being in the rank of order.<br />

lectotype (q.v.); a lectoallotype.<br />

alloneotype: (zool., unoff.) the type specimen of the opposite sex to the<br />

neotype (q.v.); a neallotype.<br />

alloparalectotype: (zool., unoff.) a specimen from the original type-series,<br />

of the opposite sex of the holotype, and designated later than the<br />

original publication of the species.<br />

alloparatype: (zool., unoff.) a paratype (q.v.) of the same sex as the<br />

allotype.<br />

alloplesiotype: (zool., unoff.) a hypotype (q.v.) of the same sex as the<br />

allotype.<br />

alloréférent: (zool., unoff.) an allotype (q.v.) of the opposite sex to that of a<br />

specimen designated or described in a publication subsequent to the<br />

original description; these specimens have no formal nomenclatural<br />

standing as types.
