addition sign, [+]: (1) (cult. pl.) the ideograph used to indicate a graftchimaera,<br />
either as a part of a formula (e.g. Crataegus monogyna +<br />
Mesplius germanica), or in front of an abbreviated name (e.g. +<br />
Crataemespilus gillottii). (2) (bot., unoff.) also used in a proposed<br />
citation system for addospecies (q.v.).<br />
addospecies, [adsp.]: (bot., unoff.) a proposed system for indicating the<br />
parents of a hybrid species, in which their names follow the notation<br />
"adsp."and are linked by an addition sign, e.g. Galeopsis tetrahit<br />
adsp. pubescens + speciosa.<br />
adelfotype: (zool., unoff.) a topotype (q.v.) obtained by the original<br />
collector of the taxon; i.e. specimens from the type locality collected<br />
by the original collector, but not of the original type-series.<br />
admissible name: (1) of the use of a name or epithet, in accordance with<br />
the provisions of the Code. (2) (bot.) of a name, in a form that could<br />
permit it to be validly published (e.g. a tautonym is not admissible in<br />
bot.); (3) (cult. pl.) an unpublished name that is in a form that it<br />
would enable it to be established.<br />
admixture: (1) (bot.) used of components (especially minor ingredients) of<br />
a gathering that represent a taxon other than that intended by the<br />
collector, and do not preclude the gathering, or part thereof, being a<br />
type specimen, the admixture being disregarded; i.e. elements<br />
representing a taxon other than those belonging to the type of a<br />
name. (2) (bot., unoff.) a gathering or collection an author<br />
considered to be a single species or infraspecific taxon, but which<br />
was later shown to contain representatives of more than one such<br />
taxon; a mixed gathering (q.v.).<br />
adopt: (1) to use a particular name, designation or epithet to denote a<br />
particular taxon. (2) frequently used when the author takes up an<br />
already existing name in preference to one that cannot be adopted as<br />
a correct name for the taxon. (3) (bot., zool.) to use a designation<br />
that is not a validly published name or an unavailable name in a way<br />
which establishes it as a new name with its own authorship and date;<br />
see also accepted name.
