213 The naming of organisms (and plant communities)<br />

wild: (cult. pl.) of plants that originated in the wild; see indigen.<br />
wild-type: (mycol., prok., unoff.) used of microorganisms as they exist in<br />
nature, e.g. a pathogen occurring in the tissues of a host.<br />
word compound: see compound.<br />
word element: (1) a component part of a word. (2) the parts of a word<br />
separated by one or more hyphens.<br />
work: in nomenclature, any pertinent written information whether<br />
published (e.g. books, journals, separates) or unpublished (e.g.<br />
manuscripts, proofs, microfilms).<br />
work of an animal: (zool.) the result of the activity of an animal (e.g.<br />
burrows, borings, galls, nests, worm tubes, cocoons, tracks), but not<br />
part of the animal; the term applies to trace fossils (see ichnotaxon)<br />
but does not apply to such fossil evidence as internal moulds,<br />
external impressions, and replacements.<br />
working strain: (prok.) a reference strain (q.v.).<br />

of IUBS and IUMS, concerned with the collection, authentication,<br />
maintenance and distribution of cultures of microorganisms and<br />
cultured cells; also responsible for the maintenance of the World<br />
Data Centre for Microorganisms (q.v.) and promoting good practice<br />
in the maintenance of microbial genetic resource collections.
