LT, [L.T.]: see lectotype.<br />

lump, [lumping]: (unoff.) to treat as members of a single taxonomic unit<br />

elements which have been previously considered as belonging to<br />

more than one such unit; see split, unite.<br />

lumper: a taxonomist involved in lumping, i.e. one who has a broad<br />

concept of the limits of a taxon; cfr splitter.<br />

lysotype: (prok., obsol.) formerly used for infrasubspecific populations of<br />

bacteria based on reactions to bacteriophages; a phagovar (q.v.).<br />

m.: see Mihi.<br />

macron, [¯]: a diacritical sign sometimes placed above vowels (e.g. ā) to<br />

indicated that they should be pronounced long; an overscore; not<br />

used in scientific names, but sometimes indicated in etymological<br />

statements.<br />

maintain: retain; see maintenance.<br />

maintaintor: (cult. pl.) the person or organization responsible for the<br />

continuing existence of a maintenance (q.v.).<br />

maintenance: (1) continued use for the name of a taxon as a result of its<br />

conformity with the code; (zool.) equivalent nomenclaturally to<br />

retention; see retain. (2) (cult. pl.) a seed-raised cryptic variety<br />

which, although not treated as a separate cultivar, may require<br />

special designation; or the designation of such by a statutory Plant<br />

Registration Authority. (3) (prok.) of a culture, preservation in a<br />

living or dormant condition.<br />

manuscript, [ms., MS, msc., MSc., mscr., MScr.; pl. mss., MSS]:<br />

handwritten or typewritten material existing in only one or a few<br />

copies; writing in which each letter is placed on paper in sequence<br />

by hand, whether manually or mechanically, without any subsequent<br />

multiplication.<br />
