otherwise the correct name or even contravene specific provisions of<br />

the Code; see conserved name.<br />

conserve: (1) to preserve the usage of a name in a taxonomic sense that<br />

otherwise would be incorrect by setting aside certain (bot.) or any<br />

(zool.) provisions of the Code. (2) (zool.) to deem a work to be<br />

published or available despite it not satisfying the normal criteria; in<br />

each particular case conservation is by a ruling of the appropriately<br />

mandated body; see conserved name.<br />

conserved name, [nomen conservandum, nom. cons.]: (1) (zool.) a name<br />

otherwise unavailable or invalid that the Commission, by the use of<br />

its plenary power, has enabled to be used as a valid name by<br />

removal of the known obstacles to such use. (2) (bot.) a name of a<br />

family, genus, or species ruled as legitímate and with precedence<br />

over other specified names even though it may have been<br />

illegitimate when published or lack priority. (3) (bot.) a name for<br />

which its type, orthography, or gender has been fixed by the<br />

conservation process of the Code. (4) (phyl.) an established name<br />

that the Committee on Phylogenetic Nomenclature has ruled should<br />

have precedence over earlier synonyms or homonyms. (4) (phyt.)<br />

names established according to special criteria, and are protected,<br />

irrespective of their priority, and must be retained.<br />

conserved type, [typus conservandum, typ. cons.]: a name conserved<br />

with a particular nomenclatural type.<br />

conserved work: (zool.) a work that the International Commission on<br />

Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) has ruled to be an available work.<br />

conservotype: (zool., unoff.) a type described solely for the purpose of<br />

having it listed as an endangered species (!).<br />

consociation, [consocion]: (phyt., obsol.) an hierarchical rank of a<br />

syntaxon, equivalent to subassociation but not covered by the Code.<br />

consocion: a consociation (q.v.).<br />

consortium: (prok.) an aggregate or association of two or more organisms;<br />

names given to consortia are not regulated by the Code, and have no<br />

standing in bacteriological nomenclature.
