75 The naming of organisms (and plant communities)<br />

ex-type, [ex typo]: (1) from the type; used for example for microscopic<br />

slide preparations made from type material. (2) (bot.) a living isolate<br />

made from the type of a name when this is a culture permanently<br />

preserved in a metabolically inactive state; the kind of type can also<br />

be indicated (e.g. ex-holotype, ex-lectotype). (2) (zool.) part of the<br />

original type specimen separated from that original.<br />

F 1 hybrid: (cult. pl.) a plant breeding term for the result of a repeatable<br />

cross between two pure-bred lines.<br />

within a population of F 1 hybrids.<br />

facies: (phyt., obsol.) an hierarchical rank of a syntaxon, subordinate to<br />

subassociation but not covered by the Code.<br />

facsimile: of a work, an exact reproduction, produced by copying and<br />

reprinting the original pages photographically or by electronic<br />

scanning; the production of a facsimile edition does not affect the<br />

date of publication for nomenclatural purposes, which remains that<br />

of the original.<br />

familiaris, [fam.]: (zool., unoff.) appended in quotation marks after the<br />

name of a wild ancestor of a domesticated animal (e.g. Canis lupus<br />

'familiaris'), or placed in rounded brackets before the subspecies<br />

epithet in a trinomen of the ancestor (e.g. Canis lupus (fam.)<br />

palustris), to indicate the taxon from which the domesticate has<br />

been derived; see exfamiliaris, praefamiliaris.<br />

family, [familia, fam.; pl. families, familiae, fams]: (1) (bot., zool.) a<br />

taxon at the rank of family, the principal rank between order and<br />

genus. (2) (zool.) a rank within the family group (q.v.).
