social and cultural norms, as well as questions of citizenship,<br />
statesmanship, sovereignty, national identity, and international<br />
community. Drawing on skills acquired in the concentration, students<br />
will participate in contemporary debates in literature and law, and<br />
produce a final paper that includes original research. This course is<br />
required for seniors in the Literature and Law concentration of the<br />
English major.<br />

MAT 100 Introduction to Basic Mathematical Skills<br />
3 hours, no credit<br />
A comprehensive study of the fundamental principles of arithmetic<br />
including operations with fractions, decimals, percents and signed<br />
numbers. Verbal problems as well as an introduction to the elements<br />
of algebra are included. Required for students needing additional<br />
preparation in mathematics before admission to MAT 103 or MAT<br />
105.<br />
Prerequisite: Placement examination<br />
MAT 103 Elements of Modern Mathematics I<br />
3 hours, 1 credit<br />
Designed for students needing compensatory and remedial work with<br />
essentially the same content as MAT 105. Students required to take<br />
MAT 103 retake the placement examination and may take MAT 104<br />
or MAT 105.<br />
The grades of P and A are the only authorized passing grades.<br />

MAT 104 Paced Modern Mathematics<br />
4 hours, 3 credits<br />
This course gives a systemic treatment of the foundations of college<br />
algebra. Topics include complex numbers, systems of linear<br />
equations and inequalities, functions, the theory of equations,<br />
logarithms and exponential functions. The student will improve<br />
problem solving skills by applying the concepts learned to<br />
applications. Students will be required to use an online homework<br />
software package. This course is a 4 hour alternative version of MAT<br />
105 and is designed for students who do not place into MAT 105.<br />

MAT 105 Modern Mathematics<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
A systematic treatment of the foundations of college algebra. Topics<br />
include complex numbers, systems of linear equations and<br />
inequalities, functions, the theory of equations, logarithms and<br />
exponential functions, and related applications.<br />
Prerequisite: Placement examination<br />
MAT 108 Social Science Mathematics<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
Recommended for students interested in the role of mathematical<br />
models in the quantification of the social sciences. Emphasis on<br />
mathematical skills and topics basic to the understanding of<br />
probability, linear programming, the power index, learning models,<br />
statistics, etc.<br />
Prerequisite: Placement examination or MAT 104 or MAT 105<br />
MAT 141 Pre-Calculus<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
Recommended for Forensic Science majors. Topics include a study<br />
of the conic section, systems of linear equations, determinants, twodimensional<br />
vector geometry functions and limits.<br />
Prerequisite: Placement examination, or MAT 105 or the equivalent<br />
