Academic Resources<br />
In addition to instructional services, CELS provides testing and<br />
placement services for incoming non-native, English speaking<br />
students in order to determine their level of English proficiency and<br />
to recommend appropriate courses. Professional advice is provided<br />
to students on how to study academic English in a second language<br />
context. Students are requested to schedule tutoring appointments and<br />
register for workshops in advance.<br />
Writing Center<br />

The Writing Center provides tutoring and writing consultation to all<br />
undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the <strong>College</strong>. Trained<br />
tutors work with students on conceptual and sentence level skills,<br />
rules of grammar and style. The Center emphasizes formulating a<br />
thesis, organizing and developing ideas, documenting American<br />
Psychological Association (APA) style, evaluating evidence and<br />
revising a paper, and writing specific to the disciplines. State-of-theart<br />
computers, grammar/writing software and a small specialized<br />
library of books on writing are available. Students may be referred to<br />
the Center by members of the faculty, or arrange tutoring sessions<br />
themselves. Throughout the year, the Writing Center offers<br />
numerous writing-oriented workshops, some specific to writing in the<br />
individual disciplines, as well as intensive <strong>CUNY</strong> Proficiency Exam<br />
(CPE/ACT) preparation. All are conducted by faculty and staff and<br />
are open to all students.<br />

Mathematics/Science Resource Center<br />

The Mathematics/Science Resource Center provides tutoring<br />
primarily to students who are taking MAT 105, 108, 141, or higherlevel<br />
mathematics courses. Tutoring services are also available for<br />
Forensic Science and Fire Science majors who are taking biology,<br />
chemistry, and/or physics courses. The center is equipped with<br />
microcomputers and related software and peripherals that are<br />
available to students and faculty for coursework and research projects<br />
when they are not serving instructional purposes.<br />
A tutor coordinator is available for consultation on how best to<br />
support your learning.<br />

The Learning Enhancement Center provides tutoring in remedial and<br />
college-level mathematics courses. For the <strong>CUNY</strong> COMPASS<br />
Mathematics test, MAT 100, 103, 104, 105, 108, 241, 242 and 243,<br />
STA 250, and preparatory courses are available to all <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong><br />
students. The center’s computer lab is open to all <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> students.<br />
Reading and Study Skills Center<br />

The Reading and Study Skills Center is open to every student<br />
enrolled at the <strong>College</strong>. All students registered in COM 101 and 102<br />
are required to complete 10 hours of independent study in the center.<br />
Students experiencing difficulty fulfilling the reading requirements of<br />
their courses and those who have yet to pass the <strong>CUNY</strong> Assessment<br />
Tests (CAT’s) are interviewed and tested by a staff member of the<br />
Reading Center, who provides a weekly tutorial plan. Students<br />
enrolled in COM 110 and 120 use the center. All undergraduate and<br />

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), a<br />
program funded by the New York State Department of Education, is<br />
designed to assist undergraduate and graduate students who are<br />
economically disadvantaged, or who are members of minority groups<br />
historically underrepresented in the scientific, technical, and health<br />
