FINANCIAL AID<br />

APPLICATION PROCEDURES<br />

The City University of New York uses the Free Application for<br />

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application is available online at:<br />

fafsa.ed.gov. The <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> Federal ID number (002693) is needed to<br />

complete the application and ensure that all information is sent to<br />

<strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> electronically. New York State residents must click on the<br />

FAFSA confirmation page to link them to the TAP application<br />

online. Paper applications are not mailed to students.<br />

Students will receive a reply when their application is processed.<br />

If there are problems with inconsistent data, insufficient data,<br />

Social Security number, citizenship, Immigration and<br />

Naturalization status, or Selected Service status, the student will<br />

be notified by a separate letter and must come to the Financial<br />

Aid <strong>Of</strong>fice to make any adjustments. If a student is selected for a<br />

process called verification, a letter will also be sent and proof of<br />

income must be furnished and a verification sheet must be<br />

completed. In most instances, a signed copy of the student’s<br />

and/or parent’s previous year’s Federal Income Tax Return is<br />

sufficient to complete the verification process.<br />

GRANTS<br />

Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG)/ National Science<br />

and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grants<br />

An eligible student may receive an Academic Competitiveness<br />

Grant (ACG) of up to $750 for the first academic year of study and<br />

up to $1,300 for the second academic year of study. To be eligible<br />

for each academic year, a student must:<br />

• be a Federal Pell Grant recipient for the same payment<br />

period<br />

• be a U.S. citizen or eligible non‐citizen<br />

• be enrolled at least half‐time in a degree program<br />

• be enrolled in the first or second year of study in a twoyear<br />

or four‐year degree‐bearing institution<br />

• have completed a rigorous secondary school program of<br />

study (after 1/1/2006, if a first‐year student or<br />

after1/1/2005, if second‐year student)<br />

First‐year students must not have been previously enrolled in an<br />

undergraduate program. Second‐year students must have at<br />

least a cumulate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale<br />

for the first academic year<br />

An eligible student may receive a National SMART Grant of<br />

$4,000 for each of the third and fourth academic years of study.<br />

To be eligible for each academic year, a student must:<br />

• be a Federal Pell Grant recipient for the same payment<br />

period<br />

• be a U.S. citizen or eligible non‐citizen<br />

• be enrolled for at least 6 credits in a four‐year degreegranting<br />

program<br />

• major in physical, life or computer science, engineering,<br />

mathematics, technology or a critical foreign language<br />

• have at least a cumulate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0<br />

on a 4.0 scale in the coursework required for the student’s<br />

major (to be verified every semester)<br />

APTS (Aid for Part-Time Study)<br />

This New York State grant program is for part‐time matriculated<br />

undergraduate students who meet income requirements and are<br />

New York State residents. In addition, an applicant must be a<br />

United States citizen, or have permanent resident or refugee<br />

status. Students must be enrolled for 6 to 11 credits. Students<br />

must make academic progress toward a degree in accordance<br />

with the NYS TAP/APTS program pursuit and academic progress<br />

requirements and must not have exhausted TAP eligibility.<br />

Students who register for a full‐time course load and later<br />

withdraw from one or more classes to become part‐time are not<br />

eligible for this program.<br />

Federal PELL Grant<br />

The Federal PELL Grant is an entitlement program designed to help<br />

undergraduate matriculated students meet the cost of education.<br />

Eligibility and award amounts are based on financial need. Awards<br />

range from $277.50 to 2775.00 per semester, depending on cost<br />
