COR 401 Evaluating Correctional Methods and<br />

Programs<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Developing criteria and standards; application of quantitative<br />

measures; operational evaluations; probability and types of error;<br />

prediction and decision making; experimental designs; post-program<br />

follow-up.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 102 or ENG 201<br />

COR 410 Independent Study<br />

(Same course as CRJ 410, LAW 410 and PSC 410)<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

A program of reading and reporting planned and carried out under the<br />

guidance of a faculty member. The topic, issue or area of student<br />

interest must concern a problem in criminal justice, constitutional or<br />

criminal law or procedure, corrections (including probation and<br />

parole) or law enforcement.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, senior standing, and majoring<br />

in Correctional Studies<br />

COR 415 Major Works in Corrections<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

A capstone course that explores in depth seminal works in<br />

corrections. Students will read primary materials written by<br />

“masters” of correctional thought and practice and will prepare<br />

critical reviews of the major works.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, and COR 201<br />

COUNSELING (Department of<br />

Counseling)<br />

CSL 110 Career Development for the <strong>College</strong><br />

Student<br />

3 hours, 1 credit<br />

A critical examination of different occupational areas combined with<br />

a realistic self-examination by students of their own needs, interests<br />

and skills in order to formulate valid career choices. Emphasis is on<br />

occupations in urban areas and careers in the criminal justice system.<br />

Attention is also given to the career development of women and<br />

members of minority groups. The course includes guest lecturers<br />

from governmental agencies and private industry. Students have a<br />

minimum of one individual career planning session with the<br />

instructor.<br />

CSL 112 Personal Development – The <strong>College</strong><br />

Experience<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

An introductory course designed to assist students in coping<br />

effectively with specific difficulties encountered in the early stages of<br />

their college career. Major emphasis is on self-awareness, value<br />

clarification, decision making and effective planning for career<br />

selection.<br />

Prerequisite: Open only to entering freshmen placed in<br />

communication skills and developmental English courses<br />

CSL 150 Foundations of Human Services<br />

Counseling<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Foundations of Human Services Counseling provides an overview of<br />

the careers in human service and the skills, theories and techniques<br />

utilized by those who work in this field. The course focuses on how<br />

individuals, government and community systems interact with respect<br />

to fostering and resolving human problems. Students will acquire<br />

foundational helping skills while examining the struggles and<br />
