SSC 325 Research Methods in the Behavioral<br />
Sciences<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
An introduction to the major research methods in the behavioral<br />
sciences, to include survey, experimental and field research. The<br />
logic, design and execution of the research process are considered,<br />
with concern for elementary analysis of data. (Registration is through<br />
the Department of Sociology.)<br />
Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, PSY 101 or SOC 101, and<br />
junior standing or above<br />

SOC 101 Introductory Sociology: Sociological<br />
Analysis<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
The study of modern society: social groups, social organization,<br />
process of interaction, social disorganization and change. Such<br />
topics as deviant behavior, social control, ethnic and class relations,<br />
culture and personality, and urbanization are considered.<br />
SOC 110 Drug and Alcohol Use and Abuse in<br />
American Society<br />
(Same course as ANT 110 and PSY 110)<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
An overview of drug substances and drug abuse. Topics covered<br />
include types and patterns of drug abuse, with a focus on symptoms,<br />
causes, treatment modalities, and other related factors. Specific drug<br />
substances are discussed, along with resultant psychological and<br />
physiological effects. Attention is paid to legal, cultural and<br />
educational factors as they relate to drug abuse prevention.<br />
SOC 160 Social Aspects of Alcohol Abuse<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
History and functions of alcohol use in Western cultures. Distinction<br />
between use and abuse. Extent of problem drinking in the U.S. The<br />
bar phenomena and prohibitionism. Theories of alcohol use and<br />
abuse. Social costs of and societal responses to problem drinking.<br />
SOC 161 Chemical Dependency and the<br />
Dysfunctional Family<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
This course examines the way alcoholism and drug abuse begin with<br />
a family, how they affect family life, the different types of family<br />
treatment offered, and the difficult process of recovery. Comparisons<br />
will be made between alcoholic and drug abusing families, and<br />
families suffering from other types of difficulties. Role playing,<br />
family sculpting and other experimental approaches will be used to<br />
aid in teaching.<br />
SOC 201 Urban Sociology: The Study of City Life<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
Explores what the earliest cities were like, and how urban life has<br />
changed over the centuries; what forces guided the evolution of cities<br />
into centers of industry, commerce, finance, recreation,<br />
entertainment, higher education and media communications; why<br />
cities face problems of inadequate mass transit, congestion, housing<br />
decay, pollution, crime and fiscal bankruptcy; how city life shapes<br />
personalities and attitudes and influences lifestyles and life chances;<br />
what solutions have been proposed for urban problems; and how<br />
different everyday life will be in the city of the future.<br />
