SPA 332 Introduction to Latin-American Literature II<br />

Study of the development of Latin-American literature, with special<br />

emphasis on major literary movements through selected readings of<br />

the modern period.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, and one of the following: SPA<br />

202, SPA 212 or SPA 331, or permission of the section instructor<br />

SPE 204 Group Discussion and Conference<br />

The theoretical and practical aspects of group functioning. By<br />

involvement in various group situations, the student learns the<br />

procedures of reflective thinking, organizing, leading, and<br />

participating in private and public discussion.<br />

Voice and diction evaluation, theory and practice, with a focus on<br />

individual student needs. Certain sections will concentrate on the<br />

non-native speaker of English.<br />

SPE 209 Dialect, Accent and Voice for the<br />

Professional Speaker<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Designed for the development of superior skills suitable for the<br />

professional speaker. The relationships of anatomical factors to vocal<br />

production are utilized in developing vocal techniques.<br />

SPE 113 Speech Communication<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Development of clear, confident and effective oral communication<br />

through instruction in both the theory and practice of voice and<br />

diction, oral interpretation, public speaking, and group discussion.<br />

Prerequisite: Department of Communication and Theatre Arts<br />

screening and, if necessary, SPE 101<br />

SPE 201 Argumentation and Debate<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

The function of argumentation as a mode of human communication;<br />

its origins, development techniques, purposes and the ethics of<br />

debate. Individual and team presentations.<br />

SPE 213 The Impact of the Mass Media on the<br />

Administration of <strong>Justice</strong><br />

(Same course as LAW 213)<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Examination of the role of the media — TV, radio, newspapers, and<br />

magazines — on the administration of justice. The influence of the<br />

media on the jury and the judge. The dangers of trial by newspaper<br />

and of TV in the courtroom. Is impartial justice possible The<br />

British approach. Problems of free speech and press; "contempt by<br />

publication" rule; constitutional protections. Suggested guidelines<br />

for the media. The psychological basis of audience response.<br />
