CHI 101 Elementary Chinese<br />
3 hours, 10 lab hours per semester; 3 credits<br />
This course is for students with little or no previous knowledge of<br />
Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin Chinese will be introduced through<br />
intensive drills of its oral and written forms. Emphasis is placed on<br />
speaking and basic grammar as well as the formation of the characters.<br />
It will focus on the most essential language items, such as sound<br />
patterns, sentence structures and basic vocabulary, which are useful in<br />
everyday Chinese conversation. No credit will be given for CHI 101 if<br />
taken after the completion of CHI 102. Ten lab hours required.<br />
CHI 102 Elementary Chinese II<br />
3 hours, 10 lab hours per semester; 3 credits<br />
This is the second semester of Elementary Chinese in Mandarin. In CHI<br />
102, the students will learn more Chinese sentence structure, more basic<br />
vocabulary and more Chinese grammar, which are useful in everyday<br />
conversation. There will be a greater emphasis on oral exercises in class<br />
and more Chinese writing after class. Ten lab hours required.<br />

COMMUNICATION SKILLS (Department<br />
of Communication and Theatre Arts)<br />
COM 101 Communication Skills 101<br />
3 hours, 0 credit<br />
Designed for students who require significant instruction in basic<br />
reading skills. Students read books focused on a topic selected by the<br />
instructor. Classroom activities emphasize strategies for improving<br />
reading comprehension and vocabulary. Students are required to complete<br />
10 hours of independent study in the Reading and Study kills Center.<br />
A grade of P is the only authorized passing grade for this course.<br />
COM 102 Communication Skills 102<br />
3 hours, 1 credit<br />
Designed for students who need to develop a higher degree of<br />
competence in coping with college texts. Emphasis is on advanced<br />
exercises in comprehension and vocabulary with an introduction to<br />
basic study skills. Students are required to complete 10 hours of<br />
independent study in the Reading and Study Skills Center. A grade<br />
of P is the only authorized passing grade for this course.<br />
Prerequisite: COM 101 or by the appropriate placement test score<br />
COM 110 Techniques of <strong>College</strong> Learning<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
This course is designed for the student who needs to acquire the<br />
necessary study skills and techniques that a college-level student<br />
needs in order to be both effective and efficient. Emphasis will be<br />
placed upon the following areas: problem solving, organization, note<br />
taking, study habits, critical reading, S.Q. 3R, test taking and library<br />
research.<br />
COM 120 Computer Competence and Information<br />
Literacy<br />
3 hours, 3 credits<br />
This course is designed for students who need to acquire introductory<br />
computer and information literacy skills. The students will achieve<br />
competence in basic computer skills including keyboarding, word<br />
processing, e-mailing and Internet access. Students will also develop<br />
information literacy skills, having the ability to understand the variety<br />
of content and formats of information, and competence in accessing,<br />
evaluating, organizing and applying it. Reinforcement of these<br />
competencies will be gained during a 10-hour computer lab<br />
experience.<br />
