CLT 101 Computer Literacy<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course examines the concepts and skills that enable the student<br />

to use personal and mainframe computers as a consumer or to<br />

progress to more advanced work in many disciplines in the sciences<br />

and humanities. Students will use personal computers as well as<br />

learn how to access the large mainframe system. The course explores<br />

the computer as a research tool, its role in modern society, and<br />

examines its organizational, social and ethical implications.<br />

Education)<br />

CEP 390-391 Cooperative Education Program<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Independent study with a member of the faculty, open to students in<br />

the <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong> of <strong>Criminal</strong> <strong>Justice</strong> Cooperative Education<br />

Program. Individual conferences with the faculty sponsor, readings<br />

appropriate to the agency placement and an analytical essay or<br />

research paper. (<strong>Of</strong>fered every semester for students selected to<br />

participate in Cooperative Education with participating federal law<br />

enforcement agencies.)<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, and admission to the<br />

COR 101 Institutional Treatment of the <strong>Of</strong>fender<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Introduction to the principles and practices of the treatment accorded<br />

to offenders in various types of correctional institutions. The basic<br />

organization of a department including custody, security and control<br />

procedures, and elements of a treatment program.<br />

COR 201 The Law and Institutional Treatment<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

The process of law from arrest to release from confinement in its<br />

relation to correctional principles and practices. Functions of the<br />

police, defense, prosecution, courts, probation, correction, parole.<br />

Civil rights of the accused and the convicted. Legal documents<br />

relating to commitment, bail, fines and writs.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101, sophomore standing or above and one of the<br />

following: COR 101, CRJ 101, or ICJ 101<br />

COR 202 The Administration of Correctional<br />

Programs for Juveniles<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Problems, procedures and policies in the administration of juvenile<br />

detention centers, youth houses and state training schools; the<br />

probation service in juvenile courts; halfway houses and aftercare<br />

supervision; special institutions for defective delinquents and<br />

youthful narcotics addicts; the Borstal and “approved school”<br />

programs in England. Field trips to juvenile institutions.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101, sophomore standing or above and one of the<br />

following: COR 101, CRJ 101, or ICJ 101<br />
