Protection Management)<br />

FIS 101 Introduction to Fire Science<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

An introduction to the science of public fire protection, with a review<br />

of the role, history and philosophy of the fire service in the United<br />

States. Includes career orientation and a discussion of current and<br />

future problems in fire protection. Note: This course is offered as an<br />

Internet-based class and as a classroom-based class.<br />

FIS 104 Risk Management<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

A study of fire insurance and risk, with the consideration of the<br />

background of the fire problem, insurance and financial institutions,<br />

development of rates, underwriting, grading schedules, the FAIR plan<br />

and roles of both government and private enterprise in the insurance<br />

industry.<br />

FIS 106 Safety Engineering<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Course focuses on the work environment — its human, physical and<br />

environmental factors. Attention is given to achieving safety through<br />

hazard control; the laws of error; monitoring systems; accident<br />

analysis; promoting safety; OSHA; Workers' Compensation, fire<br />

prevention and fire safety.<br />

FIS 202 Fire Protection Systems<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

A study of the nature of public and private fire protection with an<br />

emphasis on analysis of systems of fire detection, fire alarm, fire<br />

communications, water distribution networks, fire service, hydraulics<br />

and fire suppression.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101, and FIS 101 or permission of the section<br />

instructor<br />

FIS 205 Fire Service Hydraulics<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

A course in hydraulic principles systems. Applications are related to<br />

fire protection systems such as sprinklers, standpipes, hoses, nozzles,<br />

pumpers and water supply systems. Demonstrations illustrate and<br />

supplement the principles developed in class.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101 and FIS 101<br />

FIS 207 Water-Based Fire Suppression Systems<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course is a review of the design, operation and maintenance of<br />

water-based fire protection equipment such as automatic, sprinkler,<br />

standpipe and water-spray systems. Students will perform basic<br />

system designs and mathematical calculations. The relationship of<br />

water-based suppression systems to specific hazards, model codes<br />

and firefighting will be discussed.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101 and FIS 205<br />

FIS 209 Analysis of Urban Hazardous Materials,<br />

Tactics and Strategy<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

A study of the storage, transportation, and use of hazardous material<br />

with an emphasis on flammable liquids, gases, cryogenics, and<br />

radioactive materials. It includes a systems analysis of methods of<br />

prevention, detection, control and suppression of emergency<br />
