such areas as the design and implementation of social programs, the<br />

criminal justice system, education, employment and business.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101, and one of the following: ETH 123, AAS<br />

110, AAS 121 or SOC 101<br />

AAS 354 Africana Philosophy<br />

(Same course as PHI 354)<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course introduces students to the rich and diverse field of<br />

Africana philosophy, which is essentially philosophy of and about<br />

Africa and its diaspora. The first half of the course covers African<br />

philosophy, while the second half covers the philosophy of Africans<br />

in the Americas. Possible themes include: (1) the tension between<br />

tradition and modernity; (2) the philosophical meaning of racism and<br />

white supremacy; (3) the relevance of philosophy to liberation<br />

movements throughout Africa and its diaspora; and (4) philosophical<br />

anthropology.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or 201, PHI 231<br />

ANTHROPOLOGY<br />

ANT 101 Introduction to Anthropology<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Comparative study of cultures, or ways of life, of people around the<br />

world, with emphasis on non-Western, preliterate cultures. Examples<br />

may include Native American peoples, South American tribal<br />

peoples, the Amish, Gypsies, and the Inuit (Eskimos) of northern<br />

Canada and Alaska. Analysis of major aspects of culture, including<br />

language; marriage, birthing and child rearing; family and kinship;<br />

law, government, and social control; and religion.<br />

ANT 110 Drug and Alcohol Use and Abuse in<br />

American Society<br />

(Same course as PSY 110 and SOC 110)<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

An overview of drug substances and drug abuse as considered from<br />

various approaches, including types and patterns of drug abuse,<br />

symptoms, causes, treatment modalities and other related factors.<br />

Specific drug substances are discussed, along with resultant<br />

psychological and physiological effects. Attention is paid to legal,<br />

cultural and educational factors as they relate to drug abuse<br />

prevention. Consideration of the relationship between urban living<br />

and drug use.<br />

ANT 208 Cities and Culture<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

The basic concepts and perspectives of anthropology are used to<br />

examine the many different subcultures and groups that make up the<br />

urban environment, both in the United States and in other complex<br />

societies. It examines how these groups both conflict and cooperate<br />

with each other, as they compete for urban space and urban<br />

resources. The course includes examination of deviant behavior, as it<br />

exists within the context of the urban environment, and the ways in<br />

which the special characteristics of cities relate to the emergence and<br />

maintenance of a great diversity of lifestyles and subcultures.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101 and sophomore standing or above<br />

ANT 210 Sex and Culture<br />

(Same course as PSY 210 and SOC 210)<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Study of behavioral and psychological differences between males and<br />

females in the light of contemporary theories of social structure,<br />

social learning and individual development. Emphasis on the<br />

examination of contemporary theoretical issues in cross-cultural<br />

perspective.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101 and sophomore standing or above<br />
