Students who take SPA 101 cannot fulfill the 6-credit language<br />

requirement by taking SPA 111. Students who take SPA 111 must<br />

also take SPA 112 or an intermediate level course to satisfy the<br />

BA/BS degree requirements.<br />

SPA 112 Introductory Spanish II for Bilingual<br />

Students<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course will enable the bilingual student to read and write<br />

proficiently in Spanish.<br />

Prerequisite: SPA 111 or placement examination<br />

SPA 115 Practical Spanish I<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Basic principles of a beginner’s course (monolingual track) geared<br />

toward law enforcement personnel. It is designed to give the<br />

foundation for understanding, speaking, reading and writing the<br />

target language. Special emphasis on vocabulary and linguistic<br />

structures necessary to policing and related professions.<br />

No credit for SPA 115 unless SPA 116 is completed.<br />

SPA 116 Practical Spanish II<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

The second half of a beginner’s course for law enforcement<br />

personnel. Completes the grammar and vocabulary of Spanish 115,<br />

as necessary to policing and related professions.<br />

Prerequisite: SPA 115, or permission of the instructor<br />

SPA 201-202 Intermediate Conversational Spanish<br />

for Non-Hispanic Students<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Emphasis on conversation and reading of modern prose. Either term<br />

may be taken separately.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101, and successful completion of SPA 102, or<br />

three years of high school Spanish and the third year Regents<br />

examination<br />

SPA 207 The Spanish-American Experience<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Reading, discussion and analysis in English of selected masterpieces<br />

in Spanish-American literature. The development of an independent<br />

American conscience through the struggle and search for selfdetermination<br />

and self-expression. Course content is selected from<br />

topics such as the impact of conquest and colonization, myth and<br />

reality, man vs. nature, literature and revolution in such authors as<br />

Cortes, Azuela, Borges, Garcia Marquez, Rulfo and others. Students<br />

with a reading knowledge of Spanish are encouraged to read all<br />

materials in the original.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 102 or ENG 201, or permission of the section<br />

instructor<br />

SPA 208 The Theme of <strong>Justice</strong> in 20th-Century<br />

Spanish Literature<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course traces the theme of justice in 20-century Spanish<br />

literature. A variety of examples will be used in exploring this topic.<br />

<strong>Justice</strong> as seen in the relationship of the individual and the state,<br />

person to person, man to the Divine, etc., will be viewed through the<br />

works of Max Aub, Camilo José Cela, Carmen Laforêt, Jacinto<br />

Benavente and other contemporary writers. The works will be read<br />

in English translation.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 101 and ENG 102 or ENG 201, or permission of<br />

the section instructor<br />
