The <strong>College</strong> recognizes its outstanding students in a variety of<br />

ways: placement on the Dean’s List, granting of general college<br />

honors and honors in the major, induction into honorary societies<br />

and admission to special programs that enhance a student’s<br />

education by providing opportunities for faculty mentorship,<br />

advanced research and/or other individualized projects.<br />

DISTINGUISHED STUDENTS PROGRAM<br />

The Distinguished Students Program is designed to support<br />

academically gifted students and to refine their leadership potential as<br />

public servants. The program provides participants with an enriched<br />

educational experience that incorporates service activities such as<br />

peer tutoring and mentoring as well as leadership training and<br />

research internships. Each year, approximately 20 entering freshmen<br />

are selected for entrance into the program. Distinguished students are<br />

offered two tuition-free courses each summer that are not open to the<br />

general college population. They also have priority scheduling for<br />

course registration and are eligible for on-campus employment. For<br />

This program aims to foster graduate education, especially in a<br />

doctoral program of study for first generation, low-income college<br />

students from underrepresented groups (African-American, Hispanic,<br />

Native American, and Pacific Islander). To apply for this program, a<br />

student must be entering junior year with a 3.0 grade point average or<br />

better, must come from a low-income background and be a firstgeneration<br />

college student or member of a group under-represented in<br />

HONORS PROGRAM<br />

Application required<br />

Open to entering freshmen, the <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong> Honors Program<br />

seeks to provide cultural, social and academic opportunities to<br />

exceptionally motivated undergraduates. Eligible students will be<br />

invited to apply to the program prior to enrolling in their freshman<br />

year. Students admitted to the program will complete 30 credits of<br />

honors coursework in special honors sections of courses that fulfill<br />

the <strong>College</strong>’s general education requirements. Honors Program<br />

students write a senior thesis and are encouraged to present their<br />

honors research at a national conference. For an application, please<br />

HONORS<br />

Dean’s List<br />

Students are eligible for the Undergraduate Dean’s List if they have:<br />

• Passed or been exempted from all three assessment exams<br />

(reading, writing and mathematics)<br />

• Earned a 3.35 cumulative GPA and a 3.5 GPA calculated over<br />

the past academic year<br />

• Had no grade of INC or WU during the past academic year<br />

• Taken 18 credits during this period, none of which consisted of<br />

pass/fail, remedial or developmental coursework<br />

The Undergraduate Dean’s List is based upon the credits and grade<br />

point average recorded by the <strong>Of</strong>fice of the Registrar at the<br />

conclusion of the spring term for the previous academic year, a<br />

period that includes the summer session(s), fall term and spring term.<br />

Designation for the Undergraduate Dean’s List is finalized on June<br />

30 and published during the subsequent fall semester. For more<br />
