protocols are examined, and procedures for secure and reliable<br />

transport over best-effort deliver systems are presented. In addition,<br />

communication protocols above the transport level, for example,<br />

protocols that support the Internet and current Internet applications<br />

such as Web servers and clients, are discussed. Network<br />

programming is introduced, and students will be expected to develop<br />

several client/server applications.<br />

MAT 470 Database Systems in <strong>Criminal</strong> <strong>Justice</strong><br />

Essentials of database systems: physical database organization,<br />

access methods, data models, entity relationships, and network,<br />

hierarchal and relational structures. Use of database technologies by<br />

law enforcement agencies to facilitate criminal investigations and<br />

improve agency functions.<br />

MAT 400 Quantitative Problems in <strong>Criminal</strong> <strong>Justice</strong><br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course will focus on quantitative applications in the criminal<br />

justice field. In this connection, principles and techniques from<br />

operations research, statistics and computer science will be applied to<br />

various situations and problems arising in criminal justice.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, MAT 221, MAT 324, and<br />

MAT 373<br />

MAT 404 Internship in Management Information<br />

Systems<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course gives students the opportunity to work directly with<br />

experienced administrators in city, state or federal agencies and to<br />

learn firsthand the role of information sciences in the agencies of the<br />

criminal justice system. Students normally work one day per week<br />

(120 hours per semester) in the agency, gaining experience in<br />

computer applications in the public sector. The classroom seminars<br />

and diary conferences allow the student to understand the roles<br />

computers play in management and decision making and to exchange<br />

experiences and gain insight into the workings of a number of<br />

different agencies. Placements are available in a broad range of these<br />

agencies.<br />

MUS 101 Introduction to Music<br />

This course explores the history, techniques and cultural contexts of<br />

the major forms of Western classical music. The course’s goals<br />

include development of the student's musical ear and a heightened<br />

understanding of the ways in which social, intellectual and cultural<br />

patterns are reflected in music culture. Attendance at live concerts is<br />

required.<br />

MUS 102 Music Skills<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Principles of music theory, practice in reading and writing notation,<br />

elementary composition. Development of fundamental musical<br />

skills.<br />

Prerequisite: MAT 400<br />
