NEW YORK CITY POLICE LEADERSHIP IN A<br />
MULTIRACIAL, MULTICULTURAL CITY<br />
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM<br />
This program provides New York Police Department sworn uniform<br />
members of the service carrying firearms with skills that develop<br />
police leadership and tools that enhance public safety service delivery<br />
in a multiracial, multicultural city. Distinguished faculties from the<br />
Departments of Law, Police Science and <strong>Criminal</strong> <strong>Justice</strong><br />
Administration, African-American Studies, Public Administration,<br />
Anthropology and Sociology, together with police practitioners,<br />
created a curriculum of skills development in police leadership and<br />
multicultural policing. These college credit-bearing courses are<br />
designed to give the participants an enhanced capability for police<br />
leadership and an understanding of the multicultural population in<br />
which they serve.<br />
Admissions: Eligible NYPD officers can apply to the program<br />
directly through the New York City Police Studies Certificate<br />
Program <strong>Of</strong>fice. Applicants must complete the Transfer Admissions<br />
Application and submit official transcripts from each post-secondary<br />
institution which they attended. Undergraduate students who have a<br />
grade point average less than 2.0 at <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> must meet with the<br />
Program Director for a readmission interview.<br />

Curriculum: Undergraduate students take a total of four courses that<br />
address police and community dynamics, police management and<br />
supervision, ethnicity, culture, police ethics and race and crime in<br />
America.<br />
Students who successfully complete their course requirements are<br />
awarded a professional certificate of completion. The college credits<br />
earned can transfer to an undergraduate degree at the <strong>College</strong>. There<br />
is a limit of 12 credits, which can be earned during the life of the<br />
program. Personal academic advisement is provided throughout the<br />
academic year to insure the best plan to complete degree<br />
requirements.<br />
