PROGRAMS<br />
ADDICTION STUDIES CERTIFICATE PROGRAM<br />
The New York State <strong>Of</strong>fice of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse<br />
Services (OASAS) has been authorized by the New York State<br />
Legislature to issue a Credential in Alcoholism and Substance Abuse<br />
Counseling (CASAC). To qualify for the CASAC, candidates must<br />
pass a written and oral examination after fulfilling education, training<br />
and paid employment requirements.<br />
The Addiction Studies Program of <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong> is an OASAS<br />
Certified Education and Training Provider.<br />
Credits Required. 24<br />

Students must complete the eight courses (24 credits) listed below<br />
to fulfill the education requirements for the CASAC.<br />
Upon completion of these eight courses, students will earn a<br />
certificate which certifies the completion of the education<br />
requirements for the CASAC. This certificate can be sent to OASAS<br />
which will issue a CASAC-Trainee certificate. More information<br />
about the CASAC-Trainee certificate can be found on the Addiction<br />

Students may elect to fulfill the training requirement for CASAC<br />
by completing the two courses below.<br />
Psychology 378 Fieldwork in Forensic Psychology*<br />
Psychology 379 Fieldwork in Forensic Psychology*<br />
* The fieldwork must be done at an OASAS Certified Substance<br />
Abuse Program. A total of 300 fieldwork hours is required by<br />
OASAS for the training requirement.<br />
Addiction Studies Minor. Matriculated students may elect to minor<br />
in Addiction Studies by completing 18 credits in the Addiction<br />
Studies Program. Students may select any six of the eight education<br />
required courses listed in the first section of the certificate program to<br />
earn the minor.<br />

AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM<br />
The African-American Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary<br />
approach to African-American, Caribbean and African histories,<br />
cultures and experiences. The program is composed of a base of 18<br />
credits and an additional 3 to 9 credits. Students may fulfill<br />
requirements for a minor in African-American Studies by taking a<br />
total of 18 credits (six courses).<br />
