Admissions and Registration<br />

Police, Fire, Corrections and Court <strong>Of</strong>ficers and other<br />

Public Safety Employees<br />

Police officers, firefighters, correction officers and court officers are<br />

encouraged to apply directly to the <strong>College</strong> for admission. These<br />

prospective students are admitted to the <strong>College</strong> based on their<br />

academy training. Men and women employed in criminal justice and<br />

other designated public safety agencies should apply for admission<br />

directly to the <strong>College</strong>. Application forms may be obtained in person<br />

at the <strong>Of</strong>fice of Undergraduate Admissions, 445 West 59th Street,<br />

New York, New York 10019 or by calling 212.237.8987.<br />

Graduates of the New York City Police Academy, the New York City<br />

Fire Academy or the New York City Corrections Academy may be<br />

exempted from the <strong>College</strong>’s General Education requirements with<br />

evidence that they have earned at least 24 college credits in liberal<br />

arts.<br />

International Students or U.S. Citizens and Permanent<br />

Residents Educated Abroad<br />

Applicants with international credentials or educational documents<br />

applying for admission to the <strong>College</strong> must apply through the<br />

University Applications Processing Center (UAPC), where<br />

applications are reviewed by International Credential Evaluators.<br />

English translations of material in other languages must be submitted<br />

with the application. For admission in September, freshman and<br />

transfer applicants must file a completed application by October 1 of<br />

the previous year. For admission in February, freshman and transfer<br />

applicants must file a completed application form by January of the<br />

previous year.<br />

All applicants must present evidence of satisfactory completion of a<br />

secondary educational program acceptable to the University.<br />

Applicants with international credentials or educational documents<br />

who are applying as transfer students must also provide evidence of<br />

good academic standing at the postsecondary institution they have<br />

attended or are attending. Upon admission to <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong> of<br />

<strong>Criminal</strong> <strong>Justice</strong>, transfer applicants must provide official course<br />

descriptions and syllabi of work already completed at the<br />

postsecondary level for evaluation by the <strong>College</strong>.<br />

International applicants are required to take the Test of English as a<br />

Foreign Language (TOEFL) if their native language is one other than<br />

English and their secondary or postsecondary instruction was not in<br />

English. Information about the examination may be obtained by<br />

contacting TOEFL, Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New<br />

Jersey 08541, www.toefl.org. A computer-based score of 173, a<br />

paper-based score of 500 or a 61 for the Internet-based test is<br />

required for admission and must be reported to the University<br />

Application Processing Center using code number 2115.<br />

Exemptions: Applicants who are United States citizens or permanent<br />

residents are not required to take this examination.<br />

International students are required to obtain F1 student visa status.<br />

<strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong> is authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant<br />

alien students. Such students should forward either a<br />

Freshman or Transfer Application to the University Application<br />

Processing Center. All applicants must meet the academic<br />

requirements outlined on the following pages. Prospective students<br />

who wish to meet with an admissions counselor to discuss<br />

undergraduate programs should contact the <strong>Of</strong>fice of Admissions to<br />

schedule an appointment by calling 212.237.8873. Prospective<br />

students may also email the Undergraduate Admissions <strong>Of</strong>fice at<br />

admissions@jjay.cuny.edu.<br />

ADDITIONAL CREDIT OPTIONS<br />

Approved External Credit<br />

Matriculated students may apply for credit for relevant work<br />

experience outside a formal college setting. A maximum of 30<br />

credits may be obtained by examination, external credit or equivalent<br />

credit, or a combination of these.<br />

Credit by Examination<br />

Credit by examination refers to examinations given by various<br />

external agencies, such as the <strong>College</strong>-Level Examination Program<br />
