Eligibility criteria for clubs and their governance are set forth in<br />

Section 9 of the Charter of the Student Government, available at<br />

www.jjay.cuny.edu under “Student Government” and in the<br />

Appendix of this bulletin.<br />

Additional information and a complete listing of all student clubs are<br />

ATHLETICS, RECREATION AND<br />

Through the Department of Health and Physical Education, <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> offers undergraduate courses in physical fitness, health<br />

education, stress management and several courses addressing the<br />

physical fitness needs of law enforcement and public service<br />

students.<br />

In fall of 2010, the department will introduce a minor in Health and<br />

Physical Education. The minor provides the coursework students<br />

may use to improve their personal health and physical fitness in<br />

conjunction with career preparation. It is designed to promote<br />

healthy lifestyle habits through the study and application of the<br />

wellness principles of nutrition, physical fitness and stress<br />

management, as well as the acquisition of physical activity skills.<br />

equitable treatment of men and women. Bloodhound teams compete<br />

in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (<strong>CUNY</strong>AC),<br />

the Eastern <strong>College</strong> Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the Mid<br />

Atlantic Rifle Conference.<br />

Full-time undergraduate students wishing to participate in<br />

intercollegiate athletics must be in good academic standing as defined<br />

Recreation and Intramural Programs<br />

The recreation and intramural activities provided by the Department<br />

of Athletics are an integral part of life at the <strong>College</strong> and are<br />

supported by student activity fees. The gymnasia, pool, racquetball<br />

court, jogging track, and outdoor tennis court are open many hours<br />

each week for free play. These facilities are also used for a variety of<br />

intramural competitions as well as bodybuilding, power lifting and<br />

triathlon contests. Programs include special clubs that are devoted to<br />

karate and judo.<br />

The recreation and intramural programs are open to all members of<br />

the <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong> student body upon presentation of a valid<br />

college ID card. Students may call the department for additional<br />

Under the nickname “Bloodhounds,” 12 intercollegiate teams<br />

currently represent <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Fall sports include soccer,<br />

women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s<br />

tennis. Men’s and women’s varsity basketball, co-ed rifle and<br />

women’s swimming comprise the winter sports. In the spring, sports<br />

include baseball, softball and men’s tennis.<br />

The <strong>College</strong> is a Division III member of the National Collegiate<br />

Athletic Association (NCAA), adheres to all its rules, and is<br />

Students who wish to improve their physical fitness can avail<br />

themselves of the many programs that the cardiovascular fitness<br />

center offers. Interested students follow an individually prescribed<br />

exercise program that is evaluated periodically. Medical clearance is<br />
