Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, senior standing and all<br />

disciplinary requirements for the Criminology major: SOC 203, STA<br />

250, SSC 325, and SOC 314.<br />

SOC 450 Majors Works in Deviance and Social<br />

Control (Same course as ANT 450 and PSY 450)<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

The study of major writings on deviance and social control of 20thcentury<br />

anthropologists, psychologists, and sociologists who made<br />

seminal contributions to the contemporary understanding of the<br />

subject. The course, a seminar, will include selected writings of such<br />

theorists as Ruth Benedict, Emile Durkheim, Sigmund Freud,<br />

Bronislaw Malinowski, Robert K. Merton, and Thomas Szasz.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, senior standing, and majoring<br />

in Culture and Deviance Studies (formerly Deviant Behavior and<br />

Social Control)<br />

SOC 477 Advanced Seminar in Youth, the Family<br />

and <strong>Criminal</strong> <strong>Justice</strong><br />

(Same course as PSY 477)<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

Examination of selected topics related to the interactions among the<br />

family, childhood and adolescence, and the criminal justice system.<br />

Specific topics chosen for discussion may include the childhood roots<br />

of criminal behavior, juvenile delinquency, intra-familial violence,<br />

victimization of children and adolescents, and the role of the Family<br />

Court.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG 102 or ENG 201, senior standing, majoring in<br />

Forensic Psychology or Criminology, and SOC 309 or PSY 232, or<br />

permission of the section instructor<br />

SPANISH (Department of Foreign<br />

Languages and Literatures)<br />

SPA 101 Introductory Spanish I<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

A basic course in the Spanish language with an emphasis on oral and<br />

written communication, reading, vocabulary, and the customs and<br />

culture of Spanish-speaking countries.<br />

Students who take SPA 101 cannot fulfill the 6-credit language<br />

requirement by taking SPA 111. Students who take SPA 111 must<br />

also take SPA 112 or an intermediate level course to satisfy the<br />

BA/BS requirements. Students cannot receive credit for SPA 101 if<br />

it is taken after SPA 102. Ten laboratory hours are required during<br />

the semester.<br />

SPA 102 Introductory Spanish II<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

This course will enable the student to speak, comprehend, read and<br />

write Spanish on a basic level.<br />

Students who take SPA 101 cannot fulfill the 6-credit language<br />

requirement by taking SPA 111. Students who take SPA 111 must<br />

also take SPA 112 or an intermediate level course to satisfy the<br />

BA/BS degree requirements. Ten laboratory hours are required<br />

during the semester.<br />

Prerequisite: SPA 101 or placement examination<br />

SPA 111 Introductory Spanish I for Bilingual<br />

Students<br />

3 hours, 3 credits<br />

An elementary course for the student who has some speaking<br />

knowledge of Spanish but who needs practice in reading and writing.<br />

No credit will be given for SPA 111 if taken after the completion of<br />

SPA 112.<br />
