PED 120 – 129 Intercollegiate Athletics Participation<br />

1 credit per activity<br />

These courses are limited to students who have successfully<br />

completed a full season of participation on a varsity team and have<br />

met the pre-established criteria in an activity within the<br />

intercollegiate athletic or sport club program at <strong>John</strong> <strong>Jay</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

PED 131 Air Pistol Shooting<br />

2 hours, 1 credit<br />

This course is an introduction to the basic handling of the air pistol<br />

(which uses pellets and not live ammunition), in order to develop the<br />

proper attitude for using a pistol safely and to develop skills in<br />

shooting at a bull’s-eye target. This course is also an introduction to<br />

the historical, legal and political issues associated with the pistol.<br />

This is an activity course. Students may apply no more than 4 credits<br />

of activity courses toward their degree requirements. There is no<br />

restriction on the number of 3-credit physical education courses that<br />

can be used to fulfill elective requirements.<br />

PED 144 Karate II<br />

2 hours, 1 credit<br />

Introduction leading to the acquisition of advanced skills in stances,<br />

punches, kicks, formal exercise, prearranged sparring and freesparring.<br />

History and philosophy of karate will be explored through<br />

assigned readings, lectures, discussions and a field trip. Practice in<br />

directing and judging competitors and familiarization with<br />

Metropolitan Intercollegiate Karate League rules. Voluntary<br />

participation in intramural and intercollegiate competitions. Prepares<br />

students for promotion. This is an activity course. Students may<br />

apply no more than 4 credits of activity courses toward their degree<br />

requirements. There is no restriction on the number of 3-credit<br />

physical education courses that can be used to fulfill elective<br />

requirements.<br />

PED 133 Introduction to Boxing<br />

2 hours, 1 credit<br />

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of the sport of<br />

boxing. Topics include; the examination of safety practices, balance<br />

and stance in movement, basic boxing techniques, the use of training<br />

equipment, and health and physical fitness benefits. Please note:<br />

Students will not spar in this course.<br />

PED 143 Karate I<br />

2 hours, 1 credit<br />

A basic course in fundamentals, including stances, punches, kicks,<br />

formal exercise, prearranged sparring and free-sparring. History and<br />

philosophy discussed.<br />

This is an activity course. Students may apply no more than 4 credits<br />

of activity courses toward their degree requirements. There is no<br />

2 hours, 1 credit<br />

An introduction to the skills useful in defending against attacks from<br />

the side, rear and front. Various safety preventions and hazards in the<br />

home and street will be explored.<br />

PED 150 Tennis I<br />

2 hours, 1 credit<br />

Introduction to the basic tennis skills. Emphasis will be placed upon<br />

the forehand and backhand groundstrokes, footwork, volley and the<br />

serve. Basic singles and doubles strategies will be discussed. This is<br />

an activity course. Students may apply no more than 4 credits of<br />

activity courses toward their degree requirements. There is no<br />
