<strong>The</strong> Soviets continued <strong>the</strong>ir move south. <strong>The</strong>y preceded <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

movement by air assault landings to seize high ground on both<br />

sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road. <strong>The</strong>ir columns would <strong>the</strong>n advance under <strong>the</strong><br />

protection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se picketing forces. As <strong>the</strong> Soviets moved forward,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y left security OPs behind to secure <strong>the</strong>ir lines <strong>of</strong> communication.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Soviets reached Lakatega and <strong>the</strong> columns from Satakandow<br />

and Saroti linked up. After that, it was smoo<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong><br />

Soviets/DRA left a security detachment at Lakatega and advanced<br />

Haqani and o<strong>the</strong>r commanders (Matiullah, Mula Abdul Ghafur,<br />

<strong>The</strong> Soviets had moved into <strong>the</strong> side valleys, but <strong>the</strong> 12 commanders<br />

vicinity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y began attacking <strong>the</strong> road. Jalaluddin<br />

Haqani, was at Fakhry. Once again, Jalaluddin Haqani was wounded<br />

<strong>the</strong>y took <strong>the</strong>ir weapons, but left all <strong>the</strong> ammunition behind. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> recaptured <strong>the</strong> road and nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> DRA nor <strong>the</strong> Soviets<br />

could reopen it.<br />
