Page 268 <strong>The</strong> <strong>O<strong>the</strong>r</strong> <strong>Side</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mountain</strong>: <strong>Mujahideen</strong> Tactics in <strong>the</strong> Soviet-Afghan War<br />

<strong>The</strong> rugged terrain <strong>of</strong> Afghanistan aided <strong>Mujahideen</strong> defenses.<br />

Defensive positions were ano<strong>the</strong>r key component <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong><br />

defens. <strong>Mujahideen</strong> built rugged, ro<strong>of</strong>ed bunkers which could withstand<br />

artillery and airstrikes. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> built elaborate<br />

camouflaged defensive shelters and fighting positions connected<br />

with interlocking fields <strong>of</strong> fire, communications trenches, and redundant<br />

firing positions. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> learned to rotate defensive<br />

forces through a position to lessen <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> combat fatigue and<br />

psychological stress.<br />

What follows are examples <strong>of</strong> successful and unsuccessful<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> base camp defenses against ground attack or a combination<br />

<strong>of</strong> ground and air assault.<br />
