CHAPTER 7<br />

SIEGE WARFARE<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> besieged several isolated DRA garrisons. If <strong>the</strong><br />

besieging <strong>Mujahideen</strong> were local, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> siege went on indefinitely.<br />

If outside <strong>Mujahideen</strong> were involved, <strong>the</strong> siege usually failed since<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> could not maintain <strong>the</strong> supplies necessary for<br />

<strong>the</strong> siege or keep enough <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> in place. Since <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> were unpaid volunteers who also had family responsibilities,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were seldom interested in staying around for uninteresting,<br />

lengthy sieges.
