COMMENTARY: Less than 15% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> commanders had previous<br />

military experience, yet <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> military who joined <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> was significant. <strong>The</strong>y provided a continuity, an understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> military planning and issues, a modicum <strong>of</strong> uniform training<br />

and an ability to deal with outside agencies providing aid to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong>. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong>se were fairly s<strong>of</strong>t targets. <strong>The</strong><br />

security outposts were situated in existing buildings backed by wooded<br />

high ground. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> had concealed approaches and exits<br />

as well as inside help.
