Table 11 shows secondary education in Taiwan
prevailing, with the rate topping 98 percent. Taiwan
ranks with the United States, South Korea, and the
United Kingdom, while Japan, France, Germany, and
Australia are ahead with rates topping 100 percent.
China lags far behind at 76 percent.
Comprehensive senior high schools were established
in Taiwan in 1996. They offer a combined curriculum
to prepare junior high school graduates for
higher education and for work. Graduates from the
comprehensive senior high schools can choose to go to
work or to enter comprehensive universities, four-year
technology universities, or two-year junior colleges.
The number of comprehensive senior high schools
reached 151, with a combined enrollment of 110,215
students.
Table 12 shows Taiwan ranks among Japan, South
Korea, the United Kingdom, and France in the net enrollment
for secondary education and ahead of the
United States and Australia.
