2 – General DescriptionFigure 2.4.1View of a repository architecture in operationThe design of the surface installations is similar to existing industrial facilities (see chapter 8 forfurther details). The underground installations and disposal packages are more specific elements. After a presentationof key elements governing their design, the following sections globally describe the options proposedfor the disposal cells and waste packages for each category of waste, and a possible arrangement forthe repository zones, shafts and connecting drifts. The technical feasibility of these installations and disposal packages depends on engineering studiesand dimensioning with an appropriate degree of detail. In general, these studies are based on existingindustrial experience supplemented in relevant areas by technological testing.2.4.1 Key elements in the design of underground installations and waste disposalpackagesThe technical options proposed for the design of underground installations and waste disposalpackages fulfil three needs expressed above:long-term safety functions (section 2.1.2),reversibility and flexibility of operation (sections 2.1.3 and 2.1.4),personnel and operational safety (section 2.1.5).These needs are accompanied by a quest for compactness.2.4.1.1 Design and long-term safetyIn order to control water flows, radionuclide release and migration to the environment, and thedisturbance caused by the repository, several measures structuring the architecture are adopted.DOSSIER 2005 ARGILE -ARCHITECTURE AND MANAGEMENT OF A GEOLOGICAL DISPOSAL SYSTEM54/495
