HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN5.9 CORRECTIVE LENSESNormal eyeglasses cannot be worn under full-face respirators because the temple bars interferewith the respirator’s sealing surfaces. For <strong>work</strong>ers requiring corrective lenses, specialspectacles designed <strong>for</strong> use with respirators will be provided.5.10 CONTACT LENSESContact lenses will not be worn with any type of respirator.5.11 MEDICAL CERTIFICATIONOnly <strong>work</strong>ers who have been certified by a physician as being physically capable of respiratorusage will be issued a respirator. Personnel unable to pass a respiratory fit test or withoutmedical clearance <strong>for</strong> respirator use will not be permuted to enter or <strong>work</strong> in areas on <strong>site</strong> thatrequire respiratory protection. Employees receive a written physicians opinion that they are fit<strong>for</strong> general hazardous waste operations as per 29 CFR 1910.120(f)(7).5.12 SITE-SPECIFIC RESPIRATORY PROTECTION PROGRAMThe primary objective of respiratory protection is to prevent employee exposure to atmosphericcontamination. When engineering measures to control contamination are not feasible, or whilethey are being implemented, personal respiratory protective devices will be used.The criteria <strong>for</strong> determining respirator need have been evaluated based on the <strong>site</strong> contaminants<strong>and</strong> expected levels of protection are outlined in Section 5.1. Air monitoring will be conductedto confirm that respiratory protection levels are adequate (Section 7.0). All respirator users areOSHA trained in proper respirator use <strong>and</strong> maintenance. The SS <strong>and</strong> SSO will observe<strong>work</strong>ers during respirator use <strong>for</strong> signs of stress. The SS, CIH, <strong>and</strong> SSO will also evaluatethis HASP periodically to determine its continued effectiveness with regard to respiratoryprotection.
