OHM RemediationServices Corp. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS PLANDecontamination fluids will be collected in properly labelled %-gallon drums, and staged in asecure area until final disposal.3.6 Cross-Contamination MinimizationCross-contamination is the introduction of contaminants into the sample through the samplingand/or sample-handling procedures. It can cause an otherwise representative sample tobecome non-representative. The most important means of minimizing cross-contamination areas follows:lSampling expendables, i.e., sample gloves, pipettes, string, dip jars, etc., must not bereused. Used expendables should be labeled so they are not confused with noncontaminatedtrashlMinimum contact should be made between the sampler and the sample medium. Forexample, a sampler should not walk across a contaminated area and then take a surfacesoil sample where he has just stepped.lSample collection activities should proceed progressively from the least contaminatedarea to the most contaminated arealSampling equipment should be constructed of Teflon, stainless steel, or glass that beenproperly precleaned for collecting samples. Equipment constructed of plastic or PVCshould not be used to collect samples for trace organic analyses.lAny tools used in sampling must be carefully decontaminated prior to first use and aftereach sample.lActivities that could contaminate samples are prohibited in the sample handling andpreparation area.
