Inhalation of high concentrations produces a narcotic effect sometimes leading to coma as well as liver and kidneydamage. 93% of inhaled toluene is retained in the body of which 80% is metabolized to benzoic acid, then to hippuric acid and excreted in urine.The remainder is metabolized to o-cresol and excreted or exhaled unchanged.
