In a small jurisdiction, it is vital that<strong>the</strong> courts system operate in a streamlined <strong>and</strong> efficient manner, <strong>and</strong> in this context, <strong>the</strong>Review notes <strong>the</strong> opportunities presented by <strong>the</strong> proposal to construct a new Courts Buildingto integrate <strong>the</strong> ACT courts fur<strong>the</strong>r in a single complex.Legislation is currently before <strong>the</strong> Legislative Assembly relating to <strong>the</strong> Magistrates Courtjurisdiction, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> allocation of work between it <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Supreme Court.The Auditor-General recently tabled a follow-up performance audit of courtsadministration 206 to which <strong>the</strong> Government will respond in due course.AsbestosAsbestos is currently managed across a number of agencies:• OIR has policy responsibility for <strong>the</strong> Dangerous Substances Act (<strong>the</strong> DSA);• ORS is responsible for enforcement of <strong>the</strong> DSA, <strong>and</strong> Justice has policy responsibility forreal estate transactions;• ACTPLA manages building work related asbestos issues <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> licensing of asbestosworkers (such as assessors <strong>and</strong> removalists);• TAMS regulates illegal dumping issues;• DECCEW manages disposal of asbestos; <strong>and</strong>• Health has responsibility for public health matters.The recent review of <strong>the</strong> ACT Asbestos Management Strategy was, in part, intended toaddress this fragmentation of responsibility.
