The Review also notes work to achieve a combined registry for the Supreme Court andMagistrates Court which is intended to provide more efficient services to the judiciary andbetter access for the legal profession and community. In a small jurisdiction, it is vital thatthe courts system operate in a streamlined and efficient manner, and in this context, theReview notes the opportunities presented by the proposal to construct a new Courts Buildingto integrate the ACT courts further in a single complex.Legislation is currently before the Legislative Assembly relating to the Magistrates Courtjurisdiction, and the allocation of work between it and the Supreme Court.The Auditor-General recently tabled a follow-up performance audit of courtsadministration 206 to which the Government will respond in due course.AsbestosAsbestos is currently managed across a number of agencies:• OIR has policy responsibility for the Dangerous Substances Act (the DSA);• ORS is responsible for enforcement of the DSA, and Justice has policy responsibility forreal estate transactions;• ACTPLA manages building work related asbestos issues and the licensing of asbestosworkers (such as assessors and removalists);• TAMS regulates illegal dumping issues;• DECCEW manages disposal of asbestos; and• Health has responsibility for public health matters.The recent review of the ACT Asbestos Management Strategy was, in part, intended toaddress this fragmentation of responsibility.
