Using Technology and Communications Processes toExpand the Legal DepartmentOne issue commonly faced by in-house counsel when retaining outside counsel for aparticular case in litigation or a transaction is the time it takes to educate outsidecounsel sufficiently to enable him or her to understand the company’s business, and thespecific issues, goals and possible consequences involved in a particular matter. Evenif the outside counsel has represented the company previously, he or she will typicallystill not have the broad-based understanding of the company that full-time insidecounsel already has. Outside counsel simply does not have ready access to the sameinformation as in-house counsel. To have that level of knowledge and understandingoutside counsel needs to be brought in-house.4
