226Chapter 10 – Profession of Midwiferycourse of engaging in the practice of midwifery;(c) specifying the drugs that a member may use in the course ofengaging in the practice of midwifery.Regulations designating drugs that may be prescribed or specifying drugsthat a member may use may specify individual drugs or categories of drugs. 11Designated Drug Regulation: 12The following is a list of drugs that midwives are currently able to prescribeor use, <strong>and</strong> the conditions under which they can prescribe or use thesedrugs:The following substances may be administered by injection on themember’s own responsibility:• Carboprost;• Dimenhydrinate;• Diphenhydramine hydrochloride;• Epinephrine hydrochloride;• Hepatitis B immune globulin;• Hepatitis B vaccine;• Intramuscular ergonovine maleate;• Intramuscular or intravenous oxytocin;• Intravenous fluids;• Lidocaine hydrochloride with or without epinephrine;• Phytonadione; <strong>and</strong>• RhD immune globulin.The following substances may be administered by injection on order of amember of the College of Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons of Ontario:• Antibiotics;• Epidural analgesia (continuous infusion maintenance);• Narcotic antagonists;• Narcotics; <strong>and</strong>• Oxytocics intravenous infusion.The following substances may be administered by inhalation on themember’s own responsibility:• Nitrous oxide; <strong>and</strong>• Therapeutic oxygen.The following drugs are designated as drugs that may be prescribed by amember on the member’s own responsibility:• Clotrimazole;• Doxylamine succinate-pyridoxine hydrochloride;• Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment;11MA, c.31, s. 11.12Ontario Regulation 884/93.
