227Chapter 10 – Profession of Midwifery• Hepatitis B immune globulin;• Hepatitis B vaccine;• Hydrocortisone anorectal therapy compound;• Miconazole;• Nystatin;• Oral ergonovine maleate;• Phytonadione; <strong>and</strong>• RhD immune globulin.The following drugs may be used on order of a member of the College ofPhysicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons of Ontario:• Acetaminophen with codeine;• Antibiotics;• Antiemetic/sedative agents with narcotic analgesics;• Barbiturates;• Cervical ripening agents; <strong>and</strong>• Sedatives.Education <strong>and</strong> Continuing CompetencyThe Midwifery Education Program (MEP) in Ontario is a baccalaureateprogram jointly offered by Laurentian University, McMaster University <strong>and</strong>Ryerson University <strong>and</strong> leads to the degree Bachelor of <strong>Health</strong> Sciences(B.H.Sc.) in midwifery. At McMaster <strong>and</strong> Laurentian, the program involvesfour years of full-time study, while at Ryerson the program is offered on apart-time basis.Competencies for pharmacotherapy are tested as part of the pharmacologycourse, the life sciences course <strong>and</strong> in midwifery clinical courses. Thepharmacotherapy course includes an overview of basic concepts inpharmacy, pharmacology <strong>and</strong> therapeutics relevant to the practice ofmidwifery in Ontario. Content areas include pharmacokinetics, toxicology,adverse drug reactions during pregnancy, drug transfer through lactation<strong>and</strong> pharmacology in the neonate. In the life science for clinical practicecourse, concepts of general microbiology including the growth <strong>and</strong>structure of bacteria are taught. The concepts of microbial control (woundinfection, neonatal infection <strong>and</strong> sexually transmitted microbial diseasesuch as chlamydia <strong>and</strong> gonorrhea) <strong>and</strong> virology (e.g., hepatitis viruses, HIV,HPV <strong>and</strong> herpes) are also taught. All major families of antivirals, antibiotics<strong>and</strong> antifungals are taught.In addition to classroom instruction, the program includes six clinicalplacements, five with midwifery practices <strong>and</strong> one community placement.Clinical competencies are evaluated on an on-going basis as part of theclinical placement performance.
