246Chapter 10 – Profession of Midwifery5. That sections 1 to 5 of Ontario Regulation 884/93 (Designated Drugs)be repealed <strong>and</strong> the following substituted:1. For the purposes of paragraph 4 <strong>and</strong> paragraph 9 of section 4 ofthe Act,(a) a member may prescribe or administer, on the member’sown responsibility, the following classes of drugs <strong>and</strong> substances:i. antihistamines,ii. anti-infective agents – antibacterials, antifungals, antivirals,iii. blood derivatives,iv. galactagogues,v. CNS agents:general anaesthetics, analgesics <strong>and</strong> antipyretics,opiate antagonists, anxiolytics, sedatives <strong>and</strong> hypnotics,vi. hormones <strong>and</strong> synthetic substitutes – adrenals,vii. local anaesthetics,viii. uterotonics,ix. serums, toxoids <strong>and</strong> vaccines,x. vitamins, <strong>and</strong>xi. emergency medications.(b) a member may prescribe or administer by injection orinhalation, on order of a member of the College of Physicians<strong>and</strong> Surgeons of Ontario, any drug or substance.2. A member may use, on order of a member of the College ofPhysicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons of Ontario, any drug.3. A member may prescribe, administer or order any drug orsubstance that may lawfully be purchased or acquired withouta prescription.4. For the purposes of subsection 1(a), a member may onlyprescribe or administer, on the member’s own responsibility,those drugs <strong>and</strong> substances within the classes designated insubsection 1(a) that are listed in the Drug List <strong>and</strong> mustprescribe or administer those listed drugs <strong>and</strong> substances inaccordance with the terms, limitations <strong>and</strong> conditionscontained in the Drug List. For the purposes of this section,“Drug List” has the meaning given to it in the Regulated <strong>Health</strong><strong>Professions</strong> Act, 1991.6. That Ontario Regulation 867/93 (Registration) under the MidwiferyAct, 1991 be amended by adding the following:3.1 It is a term, condition <strong>and</strong> limitation of a certificate ofregistration of any class that the holder who performs aprocedure under the authority of section 4 of the Act mustensure the procedure is performed in accordance with anyst<strong>and</strong>ards of practice established <strong>and</strong> published by theCollege from time to time.HPRAC Critical Links January 2009
