251Chapter 11 – Profession of NaturopathyRegulationsThe College Council may make regulations, subject to the review of theMinister <strong>and</strong> approval of the Lieutenant Governor in Council, as follows: 7(a) prescribing st<strong>and</strong>ards of practice respecting the circumstances inwhich naturopaths shall make referrals to members of otherregulated health professions;(b) prescribing therapies involving the practice of naturopathy,governing the use of prescribed therapies <strong>and</strong> prohibiting the useof therapies other than the prescribed therapies in the course ofthe practice of naturopathy;(c) governing the performance of a procedure [naturopaths canprescribe] <strong>and</strong> prescribing the purposes for which, or thecircumstances in which, the procedure may be performed;(d) prescribing the substances that a member may administer byinjection or inhalation <strong>and</strong> prescribing the purposes for which, orthe circumstances in which, the prescribed substances may beadministered;(e) prescribing procedures that may be performed [as prescribing],governing the performance of the procedures <strong>and</strong> prescribing thepurposes for which, or the circumstances in which, the prescribedprocedures may be performed <strong>and</strong> prohibiting the performance ofprocedures other than the prescribed procedures;(f) prescribing naturopathic examinations prescribing the purposes forwhich, or the circumstances in which, the prescribed naturopathicexaminations may be performed <strong>and</strong> prohibiting the performance ofexaminations other than the prescribed naturopathic examinations.How Naturopathy is Regulated Today <strong>and</strong> its ContinuedEvolutionNaturopathy has a long history of regulation in Ontario. Naturopathicmedicine was first regulated in Ontario in 1923 under the Medicine Act <strong>and</strong>then in 1925 under the DPA <strong>and</strong> regulations under that Act. The currentgoverning body for naturopathy is the BDDT-N.Once proclaimed in force, the Naturopathy Act, 2007 will bring theprofession under the RHPA <strong>and</strong> will establish the College of Naturopaths ofOntario. The new Act is expected to come into force before June 2009, <strong>and</strong> atransitional council of the new College, which includes all members of theBDDT-N, will develop the foundational regulations, by-laws <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards ofpractice for the profession.7Ibid: s. 11.HPRAC Critical Links January 2009
