154 H Lindebergthat have resorbed their foetuses (Marston and Kelly1969). If females give birth to only a small number ofkits (e.g. 1–5), they may return to oestrus while nursing(Fox and Bell 1998). Induction of oestrus in anoestrousferrets has been accomplished by treatment with crudepituitary extracts (Hill and Parkes 1930). Most anoestrousfemales maintained on a non-stimulatory lightcycle (10 h light and 14 h dark) showed oestrous signs, and were bred 6–13 days after treatment with 0.25 mgof FSH, administered twice daily (Mead and Neirinckx1989). For successful superovulation, ferret females havebeen treated with eCG followed by hCG 72 h later (Liet al. 2001, 2002).ReferencesAgu GO, Rajkumar K, Murphy BD, 1986: Evidence fordopaminergic regulation of prolactin and a luteotropiccomplex in the ferret.
