What you should eat
Avoid too many carbohydrates
Carbohydrates and sugars may temporarily improve your mood (which is why they are called
comfort foods) but they lead to a crash in mood and energy afterwards.
Avoid mood altering substances
Substances such as trans fats, caffeine and foods with hormones can modify your mood
negatively.
Increase of omega-3 fatty acid intake
Omega-3 fatty acids can improve the mood in some individuals and so sources of these fatty
acids should be increased (fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines,
vegetable oils such as flaxseed oil).
Avoid nicotine
Nicotine is a powerful stimulant which tends to lead to higher, not lower levels of anxiety and
stress.
Drink no alcohol
While alcohol might temporarily reduce worries, too much and regular alcohol consumption
may actually increase overall anxiety.
