OXYG<strong>EN</strong> UPTAKE (VO2max)<br />

According to your genetics, you have a predisposition for an increased oxygen uptake<br />

(VO2max). This means that your body can also provide your cells with oxygen outstandingly<br />

well, even without training. Moderately intense endurance training is sufficient to further<br />

increase your VO2max level and performance. You can find more ways to determine your<br />

VO2max level here.<br />

CALCULATING VO2MAX<br />

The best and most accurate way to calculate the VO2max level is a breath gas analysis. Here,<br />

the respiratory gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) are measured and analyzed under<br />

continuously increasing effort. The maximal oxygen uptake is also determined during this<br />

analysis.<br />

An (unfortunately considerably less accurate) alternative to breath gas analysis is the Cooper<br />

test. The test is a 12-minute run in which determines the maximum distance covered in that<br />

time. The VO2max level can then be determined using the following formula:<br />

VO2max = (distance covered in metres – 505) / 45<br />
